Apps Search also activates another cool feature: when you make a typo in a search query, you’ll get a “Did you mean” suggestion. I’m not entirely sure how typo correction is related to Apps Search, but I’ll take it.

Hopefully this is the start of a new trend — it would also be nice if you could search for Google Calendar events from within Gmail (and vice versa). Google also recently released the headache-reducing multiple accounts feature, which lets you hop between multiple Google accounts without having to repeatedly log-out and back in.

Hours after Oracle filed suit against Google for patent infringement, Google has made it very clear that it will stand its ground.

“We are disappointed Oracle has chosen to attack both Googleand the open-source Java community with this baseless lawsuit,” Google said in a statement. “The open-source Java community goes beyond any one corporation and works every day to make the web a better place. We will strongly defend open-source standards and will continue to work with the industry to develop the Androidplatform.”

The lawsuit focuses around the Java platform, which Oracle acquired when it bought Sun Microsystems earlier this year. Oracle’s argument is rather straightforward: Google “directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle’s Java-related intellectual property” by utilizing it in the Android operating system and the Android SDK. In addition to patent issues, the suit also claims Java is “copyrightable” rather than strictly FOSS and accuses Google of copyright infringement for using Java’s code without any license.

Why is this lawsuit only being filed now, three years after Android’s introduction? It has a lot to do with the high cost of patent lawsuits; they take millions in research and legal fees, not to mention it takes a significant amount of a company’s time to pursue a patent lawsuit. As CNet points out, Sun Microsystems didn’t have the financial capability to wage war against Google. Oracle, with its greater financial strength and experience in patent lawsuits, can. And while the suit could cost Oracle millions, the payout would be even greater if it can show that Google willfully infringed on Oracle’s Java-related patents.

I had some errors when trying to install the new Google Voice Search app, Below is how to correct the issue. (Root Users Only)

1) Use Terminal Emulator
(type all things below inside quotes but WITHOUT typing the quotes)
2) type “cd /system/app”
3) type “su” and accept the superuser popup
4) type “mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock03 /system”
5) type “mv VoiceSearch.apk VoiceSearch.apk.old” (CASE SENSITIVE)

reboot phone and navigate to the “Market” and install “Voice Search”

I have been looking around for good instructions on how to “root” my Motorola Droid 2.1 (update1) so I decided to post up instructions that everyone can follow.

1. Navigate to rootapp.apk on your droid and the application should start downloading, Make sure that you allow 3rd party applications to be installed. (Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources)

2. Install the application and follow the steps on the screen to root your Droid.

If you are looking for the 2.2 (Froyo) follow the instructions below.

Install Instructions Clockwork Recovery:
1) Download file (http://www.mediafire.com/?cfy2jywymuj)
2) Extract folder named 2010-06-05.06.15.32
3) Place folder 2010-06-05.06.15.32 in the /sdcard/clockwork/backup folder on your sdcard
4) Restart phone in recovery
5) Go to nandroid, select restore, select the above folder and press the camera button.

2) Extract folder named froyo-BS-20100605-0547
3) Place BS-20100605-0547 in the /sdcard/nandroid folder on your sdcard

New features include keyboard shortcuts that mirror Gmail’s keyboard shortcuts, a sort by last name filter, faster editing options, autosaving and custom labels so that users can add their own fields to contact records. Perhaps most notably, the Contacts section looks and feels exactly like the Gmail inbox.

In speaking with Project Manager Benjamin Grol, it became clear that the Contacts overhaul was a necessary upgrade for Google. He indicated that the new version of Contacts makes Gmail a viable cloud-based contact manager for professionals, and indicated that the simplistic feature set was specifically designed with Andriod users — who can sync their mobile contacts with Gmail — in mind.

With the Contacts rollout, Google engineers have also slightly refreshed Gmail’s appearance. For example, the new Contacts section of Gmail is now accessible from a shifted upper left-hand menu, and there’s an updated “Compose mail” button that better aligns with Gmail’s button branding. “We’ve made subtle but important UI changes in Gmail,” said Grol in an interview with Mashable.

Contact management may be a tedious necessity for most, but Google’s updates to Contacts will help ensure that updating and locating contact records is a much more painless process. However, the feature upgrade temporarily excludes the audience most likely to benefit from it — Google Apps users using Gmail via their own domain.
